What can creators do with images, photographs, sounds, and data from an archive? During REMIX, Beeld & Geluid (Sound & Vision) shows film and art academy students, as well as interested artists, how to use archival material in their artistic practice—now and in the future.
REMIX features inspiring artist talks, informative workshops, and a showcase. The speakers are artists and filmmakers who each integrate heritage and archival material into their work in their unique way.
Working with archives
In the artist talks and workshops, you’ll dive into images, sounds, and data from the archive: what can you do with them, what are you allowed to do with them, and most importantly, what story do you want to tell with them?
You’ll learn about copyright and the blind spots within collections. What does “ownership” mean when working with existing material? How do you address over‑ or under‑represented voices in the archive? Which stories do you find missing from the dominant narrative? REMIX aims to inspire you to start creating with content from archives.
REMIX is organized by Beeld & Geluid (Sound & Vision) and is aimed at students from art and film academies, alumni, and creators who are (or want to be) working with archival material in their artistic practice.
Programme
The first names have been announced, with the complete program to follow in September.
In a duo interview, visual artist Aimée Zito Lema and filmmaker Menno Otten will share insights about the power of reuse, the challenges they’ve faced, and their lessons learned.
Artist, curator, photographer, and writer Anton Shebetko, along with self‑taught documentary makers Sven Peetoom and Juliette Dominicus, will also speak on themes such as memory, loss of identity, and the (often overlooked) multiplicity of historical narratives.
